Celeb Chef Spike Mendelsohn giving cooking tips at a High-5
Once upon a time (perhaps sitting in the office where you will typically find me during the week), I came across something very short and sweet.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhi
I only now truly understand the depth and significance beyond this quote. If you ever asked me to sum up my college experience to date with a single quote (people still do this, right?), this would be it. Otherwise, I’d have a rather difficult time explaining to you how grateful and happy I am to have found myself through such a great institution, surrounded by highly inspiring, dedicated, and passionate faculty, staff, and students alike. A grand institution that is known as George Mason University. Don’t you feel the same?
Our office’s mission, in the simplest of words, is that we aim to make sure all off-campus students have the best experience at college while living off-campus. This is where the quote I mentioned earlier actually makes sense. I cannot put into words how working with Off-Campus Student Programs and Services for my family of off-campus students at Mason has really shaped much of who I am today. All credit goes to the staff, my co-workers then and now, the OCC get-togethers, my one-on-ones with students who always make my day, those 12 High-5’s, and, above all, the entire off-campus community. Nothing makes me happier than seeing others happy. I guess that’s the reason I suddenly found my place here.
On that note, if YOU have yet to come out to our programs or OCC meetings, we best see YOU at the next ones! Keep your eyes out, either on this website or any or all of our awesome social media outlets.
To close, there are countless opportunities on campus and beyond your life here at Mason. I only happened to seize one of them, and couldn’t have been happier. I challenge YOU, my friend, to challenge yourself to shoot for the moon and do more for yourself, and ultimately, for others than you ever imagined yourself to. Don’t let fear hold you back — even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.
