The purpose of the event is to highlight a conflict afflicted nation from a wide variety of regions in the world, and spotlight the history of the people, the culture, the food, the educational contributions, and people of that particular nation in order to illuminate a narrative about the identity of people who are from that origin, which is often lost within newscasts about war and victimhood.
We have various tables where people would showcase art/history/food/culture from their region of representation, and talk about what the country was like prior to the conflict, how they envision the country now and what a bright future may look like ahead.
We believe everyone has a story to tell and this is an opportunity for people to share what makes them special and empower individuals to be proud of their heritage beyond the war/conflict that their country of heritage/or current nation may be marred by.
This event is hosted by UNICEF at George Mason.
