Working as an Off-Campus Advisor has been the greatest experience so far. Ever since I started working since the beginning of this academic year, there hasn’t been a single dull moment. From all the exciting events to all the one-on-one advising sessions, this job allowed me to experience a bit of everything!
Before I applied for this job, I had never worked before. Initially, I was very nervous my first few days because this is my first real job but all the Assistant Directors and Directors of Contemporary Student Services guided me every step of the way until I got comfortable with the surrounding and the work to be done. Casey, who is in the office next to ours, is always available for any immediate assistance and whenever she is not there, any of the other Directors are super responsive and helpful through texts and e-mails as they are located in SUB 1. Though this is my first job, all the opportunities that I have been presented with helped me work on my existing skills, as well as opened my doors for learning new skills. This job allowed me to grow as a person and I have all the confidence to step into the professional industry because of all the important office and people skills that I learned here.
I love holding the OCA position because it is an exciting job and it opens me to new opportunities. From all the fun events we host to leadership opportunities and advising students, this job allows me to make both personal and professional connections. By meeting and talking to a new and diverse group of people, I am always learning something new! The teamwork and positivity are what draws me to this job the most, I love all the team and personal building we do and I love working with an amazing group of OCAs and the staff, who will always have my back!
Here are some of the things the OCA’s have to say about working here:
“I like working here because I am able to help students and also learn more about the university! With every appointment, I feel like I know more about Mason and with that information, I am able to help even more students. This job has also given me a lot of chances for professional development that I know I will use in the future.”
Caroline, Senior Off-Campus Advisor
“I enjoy this job because it allows me to help other students with whatever they need from a more relatable position. A lot of the things students go through are different based on the student and it’s a good feeling when you can take away some of the uneasiness students may have with anything dealing with the university.”
Xavier, Off-Campus Advisor
“I really enjoy working here because it gives me a chance to help other students, which I can relate to. Also, it helped me to prepare for the outside world such as interviews, and what to expect as a professional. The OCA team is one of the greatest co-workers I had the chance to work with.”
Chris, Off-Campus Advisor
“I love working here because of the connections I have been able to make with students. I also love how much I’ve been able to learn about the university and the resources offered! I have appreciated all of the skills I have developed through working here.”
Liz, Off-Campus Advisor
“I love how this job integrates self-discipline and time management in getting things done including appointments and phone calls along with being welcoming to students. We try to scrutinize as much useful and relevant information as possible to effectively communicate to students without making it too long or boring to receive. This job has helped me achieve both, self and professional development goals with a balance which we also try to help other students in achieving.”
Minahil, Off-Campus Advisor
“I like working here because it gives me the opportunity to make personal connections with other off campus students and to make a positive impact in their life. It’s so rewarding to meet with students and know that they’re leaving our office feeling less stressed about housing or more optimistic about their time at Mason than they were when they showed up.”
Rachel, Off-Campus Advisor
