Gen Eds, Electives, and Major Credits: Wait What?
November is a pretty stressful time of the month. Let’s face it, we are already thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas break. Everyone loves breaks, right? However, I digress. Let’s talk about course registration, which is almost as stressful as exam week, if you can make that comparison. Patriot Web has this feature in which you can see whether or not a course is filled up. The benefit is that you can plan to take the course and basically make a perfect schedule that will fit your needs. Sounds great! But wait, there’s more! Just as you can see how many people are signed up in that course, it is also discouraging to see those courses fill up and scrambling to find other courses that will fulfill your general education, elective, and major requirements. So how exactly do you deal with this issue? Sometimes you cannot simply go to Patriot Web and figure out what to do yourself. This is where academic advisors come in handy.
Each department at Mason has an advisor for your major. This is rather obvious, but sometimes we tend to overlook what is right in front of us. Academic advisors are fantastic resources in meeting with students to discuss academic concerns, course registration, and general major-related issues. This week, all of the classes that I wanted to take filled up and I panicked. I had already outlined the perfect schedule that would allow me to work. After some quick thinking and several emails asking for referrals and alternatives, I was able to get an appointment with an advisor in my department. Even with his busy schedule, he was able to walk me through what classes I take in place of the classes that were already filled. All this time, I was depending on my department’s website for help. Sometimes it is just easier to work with an advisor instead of struggling to pick and choose classes yourself. I wish you all well in registering for classes!
